Natural gas for January delivery is up 6 percent to $5.796 per 1,000 cubic feet in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Natural gas supplies fell by 207 billion cubic feet last week, a record decline for this point in the season.
Record cold temperatures throughout the natural gas consuming regions of the U.S. have led to a dramatic spike in natural gas demand.
Natural gas supplies remain 14 percent above the 5 year seasonal average after a long period of inventory builds resulting from a lack of demand in the industrial sector.
